Garmin’s new Forerunner 935 is its most serious sport watch yet

Garmin’s latest sport watch — the Forerunner 935 — looks to be its most serious yet. It comes with GPS, a host of sensors (including heart rate, altimeter, and barometer), and supports Garmin’s expansive range of tracking features. Like the company’s previous top-of-the-line device, the Forerunner 735XT, the 935 tracks a number of cardio activities automatically (including cycling, swimming, hiking, and more) but offers particularly in-depth information for runners.

Like the 735XT, the new 935 can estimate VO2 Max and connect to the Strava app to deliver users’ “Suffer Score” — a real-time measure of exertion based on heart rate information. It adds to that two new data points: training load and training status. Training load looks at users’ exercise activity over the last seven days, and lets them know how productive their workout is compared to the past week. Training status does the same thing with a more short-term view, looking at a day’s activities to prompt users to crank up the effort, or perhaps dial things down a bit.
The Forerunner 935 comes with swappable watch straps (so you can go for a more formal look), a battery life of up to 24 hours when using GPS (and two weeks just a smartwatch), and works with Garmin Connect — the company’s online platform for tracking, sharing, and comparing workout data. All this functionality comes at a price though, and the watch by itself will cost $500. A package bundle with additional heart rate trackers for triathletes and swimmers will go for $650.
